This amazing tour starts from Acicastello where about 600 thousand years ago Mount Etna was born: we will talk about the volcanological phenomena which brought to the formation of the cliff of Acicastello and the Faraglioni of Acitrezza, geological structures which prove the primordial Etna stages.

After the unforgettable sights of the day-time paths, in the evening you can enjoy Ragalna CLC (Center of Local Culture). At CLC you will have the chance to meet the local culture, to taste the flavour of an ancient culture by cooking together with the local experts their typical dishes, by dancing their typical dances and by singing characteristic songs.

First stage

This itinerary regards the Eastern side of Etna

Points of interest

  • Ionian coast panorama
  • Piano dell’Acqua volcanic cones;
  • Lava of 1991-93.
  • Monte Calanna;
  • Lava of 1952-53;
  • Portella Calanna;
  • Serra del Salifizio;
  • Valle del Bove and Summit Craters;
  • Val Calanna

At the beginning of the path, the panorama is varied: on the east side, the Ionian coast, and on the north-west side lush volcanic cones which enclose Piano dell’Acqua between awesome lava tongues which arose during the 1991-93 eruption. After walking through the carrareccia which crosses the lava flow, you will enter the path which coasts on the right side the 1991 lava towards Monte Calanna.

Walking through the path you will find a hill between the 1952-1953 lava (where you can find brooms now) until you get to Portella Calanna.

During the 1991-1993 eruption, lava from Valle del Bove, passing through Salto della Giumenta,  has completely filled Val Calanna, destroying plantations, rural houses and water shafts which supplied the village of Zafferana Etnea.

The valley has been a reservoir for the control of lava flow, this way it has delayed its progress.

From here, on the South side you can see Serra del Salifizio, Valle del Bove until the Summit Craters; on the North side Serra delle Concazze and Rocca della Valle and in front of you Val Calanna which is a lava desert nowadays.

Transfer to Ragalna. Dinner in a restaurant and afterwards, dancing class (theory and practice).

Overnight stay in hotel/B&B.

Points of interest:

  • Laricio Pine Wood and Aetnean Brooms Shrubs
  • Pitagora cavern (triangular-shaped);
  • Ionian Coast Panorama;
  • Valle del Bove;

Second stage:

We will walk through a path which will lead us towards the Canalone dei faggi that will allow us to return on the schiena del Salfizio by facing a heaving climbing. Afterward we will proceed along the path named “canalone dell’acqua rocca degli Zappini”.

Points of interests:

  • Secular beech trees;
  • Lava basalt wall;

After reaching Piano del vescovo, our walk will be followed by a tasty lunch.

After breakfast, we will visit of one of the most appealing Etna sights: the Valle del Bove.

In winter, the path is a little bit heavy to walk through because of snow and wind. Nevertheless, it is extremely appealing.

We will walk through the first part of a hilly path for 45-60 minutes, walking through a wood of  Laricio pine for about 45-60 mins. and Aetnean broom shrubs.

The rocky base of this path dates back to the era of the ancient Mongibello (30.000 years ago).

The first part is very sloping but, after the wood, the path becomes much easier to walk through and, at a certain point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Ionian coast. From here you can reach the triangle-shaped Pitagora cavern which is visible on the left part of the path and it is also possible to use it, if necessary, as a shelter (in winter it is more beautiful thanks to the ice stalactites).

The last part of the path is almost flat and it takes to the edge which marks the Bove Valley on the south side; here the path is not visible anymore and, especially in winter, it is necessary to gain altitude by moving yourselves gradually towards your left side.

In summer or, anyway, when it isn’t snowy, it is possible to see two flow drains of the

torrential waters which have smoothed the original lava flows during the years. These events are named “sciambri” (that means “slippery places”).

Once we have reached the altitude of  2050 meters on the sea level (this place is called “Schiena dell’Asino”) we can admire the Valle del Bove. Climbing down the valley we will see a succession of recent lava flows which have altered the ancient morphology (in the past full of vegetation). Nowadays it is possible to see only the Centenary Mountains, Simone Mountain and Rittman Mountain, all surrounded by the black lava flows.

We will walk through a path which will take us towards the “Canalone dei faggi” that will allow us to climb up again on the “schiena del Salfizio”.

From here we will walk through the path “canalone dell’acqua rocca degli Zappini” where we will have the chance to see secular beech trees and a basalt wall where  water flows in certain periods of the year,.

After reaching “Piano del Vescovo”, our walk will be finished.

Transfer to Ragalna. Dinner. Overnight stay in Ragalna.

5th day:

We will get to the slopes of Montagnola where, after a short break, we will continue our excursion on a four-wheel drive car to reach the Etna summit area.

After visiting the summit area, we will climb down inside a volcanic sable rock wall until we will reach the Silvestri craters where we will have lunch at the restaurant “Crateri Silvestri”.

After breakfast, transfer to Rifugio Sapienza by bus.

From Rifugio Sapienza we will take the cable car (one-way ticket) to get to Montagnola.

Here we will walk through a path where we will see “Mount Escrivá” a crater which developed during the 2011 eruption.

We will climb up the mountain to see the “Cisternazza”, a crater bowl which fills up with water during the thawing.

After that, we will go to “Torre del Filosofo” area where we will visit the summit area and the circuit of Barbagallo craters (anello dei crateri Barbagallo) together with a volcanological guide.

(The visit to summit craters – 3310 mt – will be possible only during the periods of non volcanic activity).

Afterwards, instead of taking the cable car, we will climb down a steep slope inside a volcanic sable rock wall until we will reach the Silvestri craters where we will have lunch at the restaurant “Crateri Silvestri”.

Return to the hotel./B&B. Dinner at a restaurant. Overnight stay in Ragalna.

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Motta Camastra by bus.

Naturalistic excursion through a naturalistic path in the Alcantara Fluvial Park discovering the river which flows over old lava Etna rocks.

We will walk around the hill of the Francavilla Castle, taking the path that runs along the Alcantara river (whose name means bridge in Arabic) where the erosive action of the water over the lava rock has formed during thousands of years a series of round lakes called “Gurne”.

During the path we will have the chance to admire the works of anthropization made by the inhabitants of the territory during the centuries: the ruins of the water mill, the ruins of a Roman bridge, the Greek archaeological diggins of the 5th Century b.C., the ruins of a Norman castle and even an hydroelectric generating station.

We will also admire not only many typical fluvial trees such as plane trees, willows, alders, figs and oleanders but also some little blooming citrus gardens whose growth is supported by the net of “saie” (from the arabic saqiya which means irrigation canal).

At the end of the tour it will be possible to visit Taormina and take a stroll through the medieval streets of Corso Umberto to go shopping or to visit the Greek Theatre.
